The 2 mile (3.5km) Amador Causeway Panama (Calzada de Amador) is a must see tourist attraction located at the southern entrance of the Panama Canal near Panama City.

Built by the United States Government in 1913, Amador Causeway Panama is unique in that it is the road that connects Panama City (the capital) with four small Pacific Ocean archipelago islands.

For those unfamiliar with this Central American landmark, the Panama Amador Causeway is both a roadway and a walking path between Panama City and these four small islands:

  1. Naso Island
  2. Culebra Island
  3. Perico Island
  4. Flamenco Island

Amador Causeway Panama is a beautiful and picturesque causeway that captures the attention of the locals as well as global visitors enjoying Panama vacations. The roads of Amador Causeway are lined with palm trees and feature magnificent views of the Panama Canal, plus Panama City’s skyline, the Bridge of Americas, and Panama Bay.

You’ll find many recreational things to enjoy plus many great vendors, restaurants, and even nightclubs.

Amador Causeway Construction

The Calzada de Amador was built in 1903, around the same time as the Panama Canal. As a result, the Amador Causeway construction benefited from the 1,250 million cubic yards of rock excavated from the Panama Canal’s Culebra Cut.

The original purpose of the causeway was to prevent sedimentation in the Port of Balboa, which, if left untouched, eventually would clog the southern (Pacific) entrance into the Panama Canal. The causeway was also designed as a breakwater to protect the canal entrance.

The United States investment in the development of Panama, and in particular the Panama Canal, put the Americans at a beneficial position; the United States controlled the Amador Causeway from 1915 until World War II. The United States used the area as a military base, and restricted the Panama Canal’s access to only American ships. During both World Wars, the U.S. Military used the Amador Causeway as a powerful defense system.

Only in September of 1996 did the Amador Causeway become the property of the country of Panama. At this point, Panamanians had complete access to the area.

Amador Causeway Things to Do

Since 1996, when the Panamanians took over ownership, the Amador Causeway area has been redeveloped to attract more locals as well as tourists. Vehicle traffic is restricted to one side of the causeway only, leaving lots of room for foot traffic to access the many vendors and attractions along the Causeway.

Many visitors who enjoy Panama vacations also enjoy a leisurely walk, jog, bike, skate, or roller-blade along the Amador Causeway, visiting all four islands. Others enjoy relaxing along the island beaches and taking swims in the warm Pacific Ocean waters. From the Causeway, anyone can watch Panama cruise ships come and go through the Panama Canal.

Panama’s Amador Causeway provides wonderful views of the Bridge of Americas, Balboa Yacht Club, and Panama Bay. Several projects near the Amador include a cruise port, a marina, the Fuerte Amador Shopping and Restaurant Plaza, plus the Fiagli Convention Centers. Numerous Panama hotels and resorts have popped up in the area as well.

Also worth mentioning is the Marine Exhibition Center of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), which lets visitors get a close-up look at creatures native to the country of Panama.

While passing through the Panama Canal, it is also worth it to take some time to explore the Miraflores Visitor and Museum.

View of a mountaintop island on Panama river cruise

All inclusive Panama vacations bring tourists to what many people call Central America’s “Hidden Treasure.

Panama is the small country near the equator that connects Central America to South America. Though relatively small in size, it is brimming with culture shaped by European and Spanish traditions and a friendly population generally made up of Spanish speaking Roman Catholics.

Panama’s strategic geographic location makes it a gathering place of people from all over the world. In recent years Panama has gone to great lengths to attract worldwide vacationers and tourists to its country. Many of these tourists are eager to witness the workings of the engineering feat that often claims the title as the “Eighth Wonder of the World” – the Panama Canal.

Panama Canal Cruises

One of the most popular activities on Caravan all inclusive Panama vacations is a Panama Canal cruise. Getting to watch the gates in the canal open and close is exciting but there are also other great water adventures to take part in:

Gatun Lake Cruise

This man-made lake is one of the most important features of the Panama Canal. Strategically built in the Chagres Valley, Gatun Lake holds more than 5.2 cubic kilometres of water. What were once mountain peaks surrounding a valley are now hilltop islands. One of the highlights of this Panama boat cruise is a visit to Monkey Island.

Panama Locks Cruise

Travel by water through Panama as you experience the opening and closing of both the Mireflores Locks and the Pedro Miguel Locks. As transit and trade through the Panama Canal doesn’t slow down for tourists, this canal cruise allows vacationers to get first hand experience of how the 6 foot thick steel gates open and close as tugboats guide large vessels through the canal.

Chagres Rivers Cruise

Get up close and personal with the wildlife that inhabit the land along the Chagres River. The river cuts through Central America, crosses the Continental Divide and drains into the Caribbean Sea.

Panama Canal Top Destinations

While enjoying all inclusive Panama vacations make sure to visit this country’s most popular destinations:

Panama Viego Panama
Known to many as “Old Panama” this Spanish Colonial city was founded nearly four centuries ago when the Spanish came seeking gold. Panama Viego is one of two UNESCO World Heritage sites to take in while visiting Panama.

Playa Blanca Panama
Located on the Pacific Coast, Playa Blanca is a popular tourist destination because of its five star resorts built along pristine white sandy beaches.

El Valle Panama
This small town is built in the center of a dormant volcano and features charming homes surrounded by lush green scenery. El Valle is the perfect step away from the hustle and bustle of Panama City.

Panama City, Panama
The hub of the country whose downtown core is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean; Panama City has many tourist destinations on its own such as the The National Institute of Culture Building, Las Bóvedas, Plaza de la Catedral, Teatro Nacional and Museo del Canal Interoceánico.

Panama Vacation Activities

All inclusive Panama vacations don’t have to solely revolve around the opening and closing of the gates of the great Panama Canal. The country is full of other rich heritage sites, cultural experiences and local marketplaces that will spark your interest:

  • See the dormant volcano situated in Central Panama near the town of El Valle.
  • Explore the rainforest biodiversity – Panama is home to over 100 mammal species, over 500 bird species, and over 120 reptile and amphibian species.

Travel Panama with Caravan Tours including Colon Panama vacations to this country’s second largest city.

Colon is an extremely valuable port and commercial center for world trade. With a relatively small population of less than 300,000 Colon province is located near the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal on the North Central part of the country.

Since its early start in the mid 1800’s, Colon has maintained its charm as a “steamy Caribbean port” where just about everything goes. Tourists describe the city as vibrant, pulsing, and fascinating despite its apparent poverty.

Travel experts Lonely Planet say, “Colon Province is mostly undeveloped and virtually inaccessible, but steeped in a rich, accessible history”.

Colon Panama History

The city of Colon was originally built on the marshy Manzanillo Island by Americans working on the Panama Railroad. Without modern technology and health knowledge the island was notoriously known as being unsanitary with frequent outbreaks of yellow fever.

This changed when Colonel Gorgas took control of sanitation efforts during the construction of the Panama Canal and installed new waterworks and sewer systems, creating much healthier living.

Today Colon Panama includes some of the former mainland Canal Zone towns such as Cristobal, Rainbow City and Margarita as well as Fort Gulick, a former US Army base.

Colon Panama remains mostly free of tourists and unexploited by large hotel chains and restaurants. This allows visitors to enjoy the town in all its natural charm – including its bright turquoise Caribbean waters, beautiful beaches, local islands, and historical sites such as the Railway Station.

Panama Canal Railway Station

In the early 1800’s the Isthmus of Panama was used as a natural way of moving from the Atlantic ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The land in the heart of Central America was still very underdeveloped and hostile, featuring plains, desert, mountains and inhospitable civilizations.

When the California gold rush started in 1848 the traffic through the Isthmus increased exponentially as men from the East Coast flocked to California cities like San Francisco. Something was needed to improve the movement of people through the Isthmus and the Panama Railroad was granted permission to excavate a railroad through Panama. With a grant for over 250,000 acres of land, the Panama Railroad Company was incorporated on April 7, 1849.

During the years of building the railroad, the modern day city of Colon was founded on Manzanillo Island. This island was the perfect location to build docks for ships with supplies and machinery as it was above the high-tide mark.

Businessmen came and set up shop along the railroad to make money off of workers and the town was formed. The original settlement wanted to name their town Aspinwall after the railroad founder. However, the government of Colombia was adamant it be named after Christopher Colombus who originally discovered the land. Hence, the city of Colon officially came to be.

Panama Canal Free Trade Zone

Caravan Panama vacations take you the main commercial distribution center in this part of the world. Colon is a sight to behold, as it keeps up with technology changes and has implemented the most modern structure and warehousing systems. In addition to its competitive location, Colon tries to stay ahead by implementing modern technology to offer visiting ships the best services possible.

Caravan Panama Vacations Include Colon

The town of El Valle Panama is an outstanding invitation in and of itself, beckoning tourists from around the world to come vacation in the quiet little village located in the world’s largest inhabited volcano crater.

Indians from surrounding Panama Mountains first inhabited El Valle over 11,000 years ago. What used to be a volcanic crater lake is now a popular ‘Old Panama’ destination. Many Americans choose to retire here and the small village is a popular getaway for Panama City residents. Many affluent Panamanians also have weekend homes in area.

Located only 120 kilometers or less than 2 hours from Panama City, El Valle Panama is a must see destination and included in most Panama guided tours.

El Valle Panama Tour

The charming small village of El Valle in Panama is a stark contrast to Panama City. The first noticeable difference is that it is considerably cooler since it is located at an elevation of 2,000 feet. This unique town of 7,600 people boasts some of the best cultural, environmental and culinary assets of Panama.

One of the best ways to be acquainted with the village is to take a short home tour that shows off the unique architecture and style of Old Panama. Most homes are shaded by a green layer of trees bringing nature into everyday life.

Local Markets

One of the best places to take in the local markets of Panama is right in El Valle. Tourists can purchase fresh local fruit and vegetables, plants and flowers as well as local souvenirs featuring ceramics, wooden trays (called bateas), woven baskets, hats and keepsakes made from acorns. The local artisans love to show off their handiwork.

El Nispero Zoo

El Nispero Zoo was never intended to be an actual zoo. It started off as a small nursery run by an agronomist with a large collection of animals and birds. Over time people donated sick or abandoned animals to the shelter and as it grew in size people naturally wanted to visit. Eventually it was officially opened to the public and named the El Nispero Zoo.

Today the zoo is home to a wide variety of birds – 55 species to be exact. The zoo features birds native to Panama that are not housed in zoos outside of the country. The zoo also features exotic imports from Asia and Africa such as the golden pheasant and white peacock.

El Nispero Zoo is also home to a wide variety of endemic animals such as the white-faced capuchin monkey and spider monkey that are naturally found in the wild on Panama’s Monkey Island.

One of the unique features of Panama’s El Nispero zoo is that there are no protective railings between the cages and the path. The simple chain link fence lets visitors get up close glimpses into the habitat and behaviors of the birds and animals. The beautiful grounds are a great place to explore, observe nature, enjoy the shade trees or to get some quiet relaxation.

Other Activities in El Valle Panama

There is a long list of things one can do in El Valle Panama that could keep a tourist busy for days. Bird watching, visiting the Gaital National Reserve, taking a walking tour up to Chorro El Mach Waterfall, doing a canopy adventure tour in El Macho and enjoying a volcanic mud bath or soaking in thermal water pools are just a few of the most popular Panama activities.

El Valle – Part of Panama All Inclusive Vacations

El Valle is an important destination on all Caravan Panama All Inclusive vacation packages. While staying at Playa Blanca Resort along the Pacific Ocean, Caravan Tours’guests make a trip up to El Valle where they take a village tour, visit the El Nispero Zoo and shop at the local marketplace.

On the Caribbean coast Panama in Middle America there are plenty of sights and unique places that are sure to please history fans and all who appreciate the treasures of the past.

Pristine Caribbean coast beaches are an added bonus and can be found in the province of Colon near Portobelo and Playa Blanca. Portobelo was founded in the 16th century and was known as the port for exporting silver to Spain.

Portobelo Panama

The British presence in this part the Caribbean coast Panama is evident with such commemorative London locations as Portobelo Road. It gets its name from the older Panama town. Portobelo Panama is a small, slow-paced community of just over 4500 people. The old fort, which was established in 1502 by none other than Christopher Columbus, has been named a World Heritage Site. It was once the premier Atlantic port in the Spanish New World.

Playa Blanca Panama

A stay at Playa Blanca Resort is well worth it if only to relax or walk along the printine white sandy beaches of Playa Blanca Panama. This stretch of Caribbean beach run continuously between Playa Farallón and Playa Santa Clara.

Iglesia de San Felipe Church

Perhaps the most popular destination on the Caribbean coast Panama is Iglesia de San Felipe, the church known around the world for the life-size Black Christ (Nazareno of Portobelo). The statue showing Christ carrying a cross is moved to the church center during the Black Christ Festival. Closely associated with the effigy and the festival is the museum that displays dozens of robes donated for the festival. Some of these treasured items have been in use for more than a century. The story surrounding this icon puts the date of arrival in Portobelo at about 1658.

Colon Panama

The seaport of Colon on the Caribbean coast of Panama is near the entrance to the Panama Canal, one of the most ambitious and important construction projects ever undertaken. Colon is often referred to as a second city in Panama, behind the major metropolis and capital, Panama City. The city of Colon now incorporates several towns and a former United States Army base.

Unlike some of the old towns of Panama, Colon is relatively new. It was established in 1850 by U.S. leaders and construction crews, to be used as the Atlantic terminal for railroad service. Colon was first established on Manzanillo Island and was connected to Panama by a specially built causeway. The streets of Colon were often lined by balconied, multi-story buildings that housed theaters, night clubs, dance halls, etc. Because the railroad and the Panama Canal construction no longer energize its economy, Colon is not as vibrant as it once was but the Colonial influence and ambience of this unique Caribbean coast Panama city continues to draw tourists from around the globe.

Caribbean Coast Beaches

With all of the Spanish history and interest generated by the Panama Canal, it might seem that this Central American country would be ignored as an outdoor-activity spot. But Panama’s Caribbean coast beaches host world class resorts and are popular with surfers and with those who simply want to relax in the sun. Lush tropical rainforests come right down to the water’s edge in some places, while palm trees frame the soft sand elsewhere.

Caribbean coast Panama attracts travellers wanting to visit many other beautiful locations such as the San Blas Islands and Bocas del Toro. The islands are popular as snorkelling spots because of the varied fish populations and the visible shipwreck. Sailing and fishing tours are also available in the Bocas del Toro area. The towns on both sides of the canal are perfect bases for viewing the ships using this gateway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.
