Caravan Tours offers 3 different fully guided all inclusive Central America vacations including:

  • Costa Rica
  • Panama
  • Guatemala

Central America, otherwise known as Latin America, is classified as a biodiversity hotspot extending from Guatemala in the north down to Panama in the south.

As one of only 25 biodiversity hotspot areas in the world, this sub-continent contains over 1,500 species of plants.

To preserve this fragile but attractive biodiversity, many countries within Central America, including Costa Rica, Guatemala and Panama have embraced eco-tourism and actively promote Central America vacations to travelers around the world.

Panama Vacations

Panama is a vibrant and lively country that is famous for accommodating over 14,000 vessels that pass through its waters each year thanks to the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal and its amazing lock systems has proven to be a popular Central America attraction but Panama’s biodiversity has even more to offer when holidaying in this beautiful country:

Panama Rainforests – The rainforests border both sides of the Panama Canal. Because the canal acts as a bridge between Central and South America, Panama Central America vacations often include guided tours of the Panama rainforests, which have a wide range of plant and animal species including jaguars, armadillos and howler monkeys.

Gatun Lake and Embera Indian Village – Man-made Gatun Lake is over 33 kilometers long and guides vessels through the Isthmus of Panama. Panama vacations also include a rainforest cruise on the Chagres River to visit an authentic Embera Indian village..

Central America vacations to Panama may also include other popular tourist attractions including Panama City (Old Panama), Panama Canal Cruises, Gamboa Rainforest, and Playa Blanca. Read more information here.

Costa Rica Vacations

The name Costa Rica literally means “Rich Coast” and despite its small size (only 20,000 square miles), Costa Rica is full of major ecological attractions. Eco-tourism vacations can include:

Leatherback Turtle Marine National Park – Located in Guanacaste, Leatherback Turtle National Park is part of a wildlife refuge and was created in 1991 to help protect the nesting grounds of the Giant Leatherback turtle, which can grow up to 11 feet long and over 1100 pounds. Come vacation in Costa Rica during nesting season, which is any time between September and March. This national park also protects 174 bird species, plus monkeys and crocodiles and numerous other indigenous wildlife..

Poás and Arenal Volcanoes – Poás Volcano, with its mile wide crate, is located in the middle of Costa Rica and has the world’s largest active crater, which is capable of shooting 800 foot geysers. Arenal Volcano is northwest of San Jose and features three craters and holds a place among the top ten active volcanoes in the world.

Cano Negro National Wildlife Refuge – The best Costa Rica Central America vacations include a chance to float down the Rio Frio River through the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge where you can spot crocodiles, lizards that walk on water, spider monkeys and reclusive jaguars (from a safe distance, of course).

Costa Rica Central America tours may also include a trip through Guanacaste tropical rainforests, plus the rainforest near Arenal and the Escallonia cloud forests.

Guatemala Vacations

With a landscape shaped by sandy dunes, hilly valleys, rivers and highlands, Guatemala is an exciting place to travel and explore on any Central America vacation.

Guatemala’s amazing landscape includes Lake Atitlán, the deepest lake in all of Central America, which is uniquely surrounded by three of Guatemala’s volcanoes.

As well, the neighboring villages around Lake Atitlán have maintained their true Mayan culture.

The focus of most Guatemalan Central America vacations is generally on the ancient Tikal and Mayan Ruins of Guatemala. The village of Antigua has a real colonial feel to it the designation as world heritage sites help protect national monuments such as the ruins of the Temple of the Grand Jaguar and Plaza of the Seven Temples.

In this post we’ll take a look at our Guatemala Mayan ruins tours including the Tikal ruins and the ancient Mayan archaeological site of Quiriguá.

As far as we can tell from what has been recovered (and from ancient folklore) Mayan culture is really a diffusion of cultures that evolved through trade exchange. The Mayan culture of Guatemala is also famous for its sophisticated written language, art, architecture, and astronomy.

Caravan also includes additional stopovers at a number of less visited authentic Mayan villages where Caravan travelers can experience today’s Mayan culture firsthand.

Our itinerary for Caravan Guatemala Mayan ruins tours include the following Mayan locations:

National Museum of Archaeology

Guatemala’s National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology is full of ancient Mayan artifacts and is located in Guatemala City. Caravan vacationers will enjoy an immersive tour through ancient Mayan history and how Guatemala’s civilizations existed prior to Columbian cultures entering the country. At the museum, Caravan guests can view an extensive collection of Mayan pottery and jewelry, which is sure to tweak the interest of the artist and historian in all of us.

Mayan Villages along Lake Atitlán

While many visit Lake Atitlán in Guatemala simply because of its reputation as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, most Guatemala visitors also get to experience Mayan culture as it exists today. Many Indian villages surround Lake Atitlán and Mayan residents still wear traditional Mayan clothing. Our Guatemala Mayan ruins tours offer a glimpse into pure Guatemala Mayan culture; one can even visit a colorful artisan market!

Tikal Ruins of Guatemala

The Tikal ruins are a major part of our Caravan Guatemala Mayan ruins tours. Tikal was once the most powerful kingdom in the entire ancient Mayan empire.

One of the best places to stay when up north in Tikal National Park is the Villa Maya, a near 70-acre nature preserve. From here, Guatemala vacationers can set out to explore the ancient Mayan civilizations among the ruins of Tikal.

Dating back to 700 B.C., Tikal is one of the most magnificent Mayan cities of all time. Set in a backdrop of tropical rainforests, complete with spider monkeys and tropical birds, Tikal allows Guatemala vacationers the chance to explore all the famous points in Tikal’s great plaza, including Mayan temples, ball courts, pyramids, and more.

Quiriguá Mayan Site

Perhaps a little less visited but just as intriguing is Quiriguá, an ancient Mayan archaeological site. The Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quirigua have undergone amazing preservation and is now a Unesco World Heritage Site. Here visitors can see some of the world’s largest stone monoliths complete with carvings from ancient Mayan citizens. The carved Staelae and the ruins of Quiriguá act as a historical record of Guatemala’s ancient past dating back to the 8th century.

Tak an Antigua Guatemala vacation with Caravan Tours. Antigua is surrounded by three breathtaking volcanoes including Agua, Fuego and Acatenango volcanoes, making Antigua a near perfect setting for a Guatemala vacation.

Antigua or “Antique” Guatemala is in close proximity to Guatemala City but is strikingly different. With an economy mainly driven by tourism, Antigua is a much calmer and quieter destination in Guatemala.

Thanks to Caravan’s Guatemala guided tours you can experience the history of Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which is seemingly unchanged today, nearly 300 years later.

Antigua Guatemala History

At its peak, Antigua was among the top three most important Spanish colonies in the Americas.

When Guatemala’s capital of Ciudad Vieja was destroyed by a volcano in 1541 the authorities decided to move the capital just five miles away in the Panchoy Valley – thus founding present day Antigua Guatemala.

Antigua served as the military governor of Spanish Colonial Guatemala (what many consider present day Central America and southern Mexico) for over two centuries. As a political hotspot, Antigua attracted nearly 3 dozen monastic orders to the area. Lavish monasteries, convents and cathedrals along with government buildings and stately homes were constructed in typical Mayan fashion.

Unfortunately, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in 1717 destroyed more than 3,000 Antiguan buildings.  This devastation followed by the Santa Marta earthquakes in 1773 destroyed most of the town causing authorities to order that the capital city be moved to a safer location.

Present day Guatemala City in the Valley of the Shrine became the new capital and the much damaged Santiago de los Caballeros was ordered abandoned. Even though the city wasn’t completely abandoned, the civilization still became known as la Antigua Guatemala (the Old Guatemala).

Antigua Guatemala UNESCO Heritage Site

Although a good portion of Antigua was destroyed in the 1773 earthquake several major monuments remain today and are usually included in most Antigua Guatemala tours.

The Guatemalan government has chosen to preserve Antigua’s colonial architecture that includes religious, private and government buildings from the past by signing with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO).

The goal of UNESCO is to ensure the protection of the world’s natural and culture heritage sites, regardless of where they are located. This means that tourists from all over the world who book Antigua Guatemala tours can come and enjoy Antigua for years to come since the heritage site is protected from future development.

Antigua Guatemala Today

Thanks to the preservation as a UNESCO World Heritage site, for people who vacation in Antigua today it is like taking a step back in time. To many it seems that nothing has changed in over 300 years in this city. The cobblestone streets are lined by brilliantly colored single-story buildings and surrounded by tropical gardens, plazas and fountains.

Antigua Guatemala is one of the most popular destinations to study Spanish – there are over 75 schools that Spanish students can attend to perfect the language skills while staying in a city that is pivotal to Guatemala’s history.

Although Antigua plight through history has included natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and fires, the once capital of Guatemala remains a very popular tourist destination. During the two night stay in Antigua, Caravan’s Guatemala tour guests get to fully explore Antigua with an itinerary that includes:

  • Walking tour of the Antigua’s Main Plaza
  • Cathedral and Fountain of Sirens
  • Las Capuchinas Convent and 18 circular living quarters
  • Free time to explore Antigua and enjoy Porta Hotel

It should be noted that if one chooses to visit Antigua during Lent and Easter they will have the opportunity to experience the largest celebrations in all of the Western Hemisphere.

The growth in Guatemala tourism, which now makes up 25% of the country’s GDP, has been essential to the success of their economy as nearly two million travelers from around the globe descend upon this tiny Central American country annually.

Curious tourists come here to explore a mixture of ancient Mayan treasures and archaeological sites like Quirigua and Tikal, along with unique Colonial cities and culture found in places like Guatemala City and Antigua.

Guatemalans have embraced Guatemala tourism by establishing world-class hotel accommodations and professionally guided tours, as well as selling authentic Guatemalan foods, handicrafts and other indigenous artwork.

Mayan Tourism Guatemala

Mayan culture and the Mayan influence can be found throughout Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and almost all of Guatemala. Ancient Mayan people built giant plazas, temples and pyramids, with ancient carvings recording their unique history and culture.

Quirigua Tourism  – Quirigua Archaeological Park, is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in the Izabel region of Guatemala and features the ruins and monuments of an ancient royal Mayan city that dates back to between 400 and 800 AD. Quirigua’s huge stone monuments called Stelae, feature fascinating hieroglyphic text chronicling the historical record of the city’s ancient Mayan mythology, calendars, and events. Quirigua’s archaeological ruins also include amazing pyramidal structures like the Great Plaza, Plaza of the Temple, and the Ceremonial Plaza.

Tikal Tourism – Perhaps the greatest architectural feat of the Mayan people can be found in the remote ancient Maya ruins of Tikal Guatemala, in the Northern part of this Central American country. Despite its greatness and its unique place in our world history, the cause of the collapse of the Mayan civilization in Tikal remains a mystery to this day. Perhaps the mysterious or unknown is what makes exploring the Tikal ruins so intriguing.

Tikal (also known as Place of Tongues or Place of Voices) is now a national park and UNESCO world heritage site. At its peak, Tikal was home to nearly 100,000 people complete with palaces, terraces, causeways, aqueducts and even ball courts. Why a city so large was completely abandoned by 900AD and then consumed by the rainforest jungle remains a mystery. Tourists that visit Tikal are discovering an ancient Mayan city that is still pretty much as it always was 1200 years ago.
