About the Maritime Provinces
NEW BRUNSWICK
New Brunswick, one of Canada’s first four original provinces (1867), is in the Appalachian Mountains just east of the state of Maine, USA. The most notable tourist attraction in New Brunswick in the Bay of Fundy and the Fundy Tides (the world’s highest tides), which can raise an incredible 52 feet (16 meters) daily.
NOVA SCOTIA
Although Nova Scotia is Canada’s second-smallest province it was also one of Canada’s first original four provinces (along with New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec). In all, the province of Nova Scotia has over 2500 miles (4051 km) of coastline, which includes scenic Cape Breton Island.
The most notable attractions in Nova Scotia include the capital city of Halifax, Cabot Trail (the scenic highway through the Cape Breton Highlands) plus the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site and the Fortress of Louisbourg.
PRINCE EDWARD ISALND
To the east of New Brunswick is Prince Edward Island (aka “PEI” or “Garden of the Gulf”). PEI is Canada’s smallest province and situated in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
The capital of PEI is Charlottetown, which is also known as the “Birthplace of Confederation” even though PEI didn’t officially join Canada until 1873, six years after confederation.
Prince Edward Island’s most notable attraction is the Green Gables farmhouse located in Cavendish. Anne of Green Gables is Canada’s biggest selling novel.
Another notable attraction of PEI is the 8-mile-long Confederation Bridge, Canada’s longest bridge that connects PEI to New Brunswick.
